Fisheries Biologist – Field & Laboratory Lead

Job Summary

Assist NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Alaska Fisheries Science Center (AFSC), Integrated Ecosystem Research Program (IERP). This position will provide fisheries field and laboratory support, including biological sample processing, data collection, and participation in oceanographic surveys to support NOAA Fisheries’ ecosystem research priorities. AFSC conducts fisheries oceanographic research in Alaska’s marine ecosystems to understand how environmental variability affects commercially important species such as salmon, groundfish, and crab.

Responsibilities

Field & Survey Support

  • Participate in research surveys aboard vessels
  • Assist with fish, zooplankton, and invertebrate sampling
  • Assist with physical oceanography sampling, including CTD operations
  • Follow sampling protocols provided by the Chief Scientist

Laboratory Coordination

  • Inventory samples arriving at the laboratory
  • Measure length and weight of organisms
  • Remove otoliths, stomachs, and tissue samples
  • Prepare samples for genetics, isotope, and energetic analyses
  • Homogenize samples for laboratory processing
  • Prepare samples for lipid and isotope analysis
  • Record and enter data from laboratory analyses

General Support

  • Perform data entry and quality control checks
  • Prepare monthly progress reports
  • Complete required NOAA training

Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in fisheries science, marine biology, oceanography, or related field
  • 0–3+ years of relevant field and/or laboratory experience

Preferred Experience

  • Experience processing marine biological samples
  • Experience working aboard research or commercial vessels
  • Experience organizing and quality-checking scientific data

Additional Requirements

  • Ability to travel, including field deployments
  • Ability to work in laboratory and at-sea environments
  • Ability to obtain and maintain Public Trust clearance

Compensation

$50,000 – $80,000
